Migraine

Migraine

A migraine is a severe headache often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. It typically presents as a throbbing pain on one side of the head and can last from hours to days. Migraines may be preceded by an aura, which includes visual disturbances or tingling sensations. Triggers include stress, hormonal changes, certain foods and drinks, and lack of sleep. Treatment involves over-the-counter or prescription medications to relieve pain and prevent attacks, as well as lifestyle changes to avoid triggers. Migraines can significantly impact daily activities and require careful management.

Types of Migraines:

1. Migraine with Aura (formerly called classic migraine)

  • Preceded by sensory disturbances called auras, which can include visual phenomena (flashes of light, blind spots), sensory changes (tingling in the hands or face), or speech disturbances.

  • Auras typically last 20 to 60 minutes before the headache begins.

2. Migraine without Aura (formerly called common migraine):

  • No aura precedes the headache.

  • Symptoms include moderate to severe pulsating pain, usually on one side of the head, worsened by physical activity.

3. Chronic Migraine

  • Occurs 15 or more days per month for more than three months, with at least eight days having migraine features.
